Denmark Street

Address

Denmark Street, LimerickGoogle MapsArrow
  • The origins of this street’s name are not documented, but there are many theories. One possibility is that it was named after the sister of George III, who became the Queen of Denmark; another is that it was named because of Limerick’s ancient connections with the Vikings, who founded the city in 922 AD.
  • This site was one of 12 venues for the 30th edition of EVA in 2006, curated by Katerina Gregos (b. 1967, Greece) and titled give(a)way.
  • An empty shop on Denmark Street was host to Johanna Lecklin’s (b. 1972, Finland) participatory video project Story Café (2005–06).
  • For Story Café, the artist offered passersby a cup of coffee in exchange for a filmed encounter in which they would share a personal story. This touring project has taken place in several other cities including Berlin, London, Liverpool, Helsinki, Tallinn, Moscow, Kuopio, Brussels, Fribourg, Turku and Terni.
