Former Post Office

Address

9 Lower Cecil St, LimerickGoogle MapsArrow
  • This former post office was designed by architect Thomas John Mellon in the early 20th century. It was once a focal point in the commercial district of the city.
  • This site was one of 18 venues for the 27th edition of EVA in 2003, curated by Virginia Pérez-Ratton (b. 1950, Costa Rica) and titled on the border of each other.
  • On the exterior of the building, Sean Lynch (b. 1978, Ireland) presented Limerick Action No. 2 (2003), from his Limerick Action series. The work consisted of a reproduction of a historical illustration of the 19th-century ‘Hanging Gardens’ that once occupied the site.
  • Designed by local businessman William Roche, the Hanging Gardens were an elaborate terrace of gardens on arched vaults that stretched from O’Connell Street to Henry Street. They fell into ruin upon Roche’s death in 1850 and were subsequently redeveloped.
